DIY Painted Jeans

Every time I come to Japan in the spring I get to see the beautiful cherry blossoms in bloom! They are all over the city, from parks to side roads and balconies, their beauty paints the city with gorgeous color! You can’t help but look up and smile.

Everyone is camera-happy franticly trying to capture the perfect picture of these pretty flowers that last only two weeks! As their peak bloom passes, their petals begin to fall in a snow-like flurry. It’s absolutely breath-taking!

This inspired me to paint a pair of jeans covered in cherry blossoms so that I could carry their beauty with me all year round! I love to paint, but instead of painting a canvas, I was now painting denim, a nice change of pace.

All it took to complete this fun DIY was a trip to my local Michael’s Craft store for some fabric paint, and TJ Max for a loose pair of boyfriend-style jeans.

It is important to map out your design, and think about where you are going to cut your knee slits later. You don’t want to cut through your painted work. I’m not going to lie, these took a little longer to paint than I thought they would. The problem was I got better at painting the flowers as I went along, and had to go back and fix the previous ones. I played with a mixture of pinks, whites, and light purples.

Loading my brush with these colors created a great highlighting effect for the petals. With whatever design you decide to do, I suggest practicing on paper before you start on your jeans, so you don’t mess them up.

Once I had my flowers how I wanted them, I began to splatter different paint colors all over my jeans to give them some added character!

Make sure you have enough paper under your jeans so that when you begin splattering, it’s there to protect your floor from the paint.

After you have allowed the paint to dry for about ten minutes, you can then start distressing the knee area to give the jeans a more worn-in look.

Cut horizontal slits around the knee area, or where ever you want them. I left about an inch on each side, from the end of my cut to the seams.

Then I began pulling the slits with tweezers to frey them. Do this until you get your desired look!

Then flip your jeans over and splatter the back or add more flowers! Once the paint is completely dry, you are free to wear your jeans all over town and can now add fashion designer to your resume!

I get so many complements on these jeans! People always ask me where I bought them. Little do they know, these babies are one of a kind made by yours truly! 😉
